Turmeric is a culinary spice with many medicinal properties and a relative of the ginger plant. Widely used in many Asian cuisines for flavor, it is used medicinally in Ayurveda.

One tasty way to add turmeric to my diet is Golden Turmeric Milk, which I enjoy in the morning, afternoon or evening. Eating turmeric with some good healthy fat (coconut oil or ghee) helps to prevent stomach upset and allows better absorption of the spice.

Difficulty: Beginner
Servings: 1 cup of paste

Ingredients

Turmeric paste

Golden milk (per cup)

Instructions

Turmeric paste

  1. Combine pepper, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, and salt in a small bowl. Set aside.
  2. Combine turmeric and 1 1/2 cups of water in a small pot, stirring constantly with a whisk. Bring to a very gentle simmer, stirring constantly.
  3. Add the mixed spices and continue to cook on low, stirring for 3-5 minutes, until the paste is thick and smooth.
  4. Turn off the heat and add coconut oil or ghee. Continue to stir until completely smooth.
  5. Add the optional sweetener and mix thoroughly while the mixture cools.
  6. Transfer to a clean glass jar; the paste will thicken as it cools. Place the lid on after it has completely cooled. Store in the fridge for 2-3 weeks, using a clean spoon each time.

Golden turmeric milk

  1. Place 1 cup of milk in a small pot. Add 1-2 teaspoons of turmeric paste and bring just to a boil.
  2. Pour into a mug. Add a pinch of cinnamon, turmeric, or nutmeg if you like. Enjoy!

Note

  • Golden Turmeric Milk promotes relaxation and sleep. Drink it about an hour before bedtime to get the full effects.
